The Story behind the remarkable turnaround of New Zealand Post

By Vivienne Smith

New Zealand Post began operating on 1 April 1987 - one of three new businesses created by the corporatisation of the New Zealand Post office - and the one everybody expected to fail. Postal services around the world lost money - the majority continue to do so. It was not considered that the mere application of commercial practices to New Zealand's postal service would reverse a pattern of escalating losses, predicted to reach $40 million in the 1987-88 year.

Instead, the company astonished observers and staffers alike, by making an after tax profit of $72.1 million in its first year. In the ten years since it has been corporatised, it has not cost the taxpayer a cent. Rather, it has contributed $561 million in taxes and dividends to the country.
