The gold rushes were the biggest single event in the history of colonial New Zealand. Old tailings, abandoned townships, derelict dwellings and other scars on our land left behind by its ransacking for the ‘royal metal’ are visible to this day. Yet the rushes have attracted very little serious analytical history.

Diggers, Hatters & Whores: The Story of the New Zealand Gold Rushes is a carefully researched social history of the rushes that swept the colony from the 1850s to the 1870s.

It opens with a survey of worldwide gold rushes, when for the first time in history a vast army of gold diggers began to revolve from continent to continent. It then looks at the rushes throughout the country – Coromandel, Golden Bay, Otago, Marlborough, the West Coast and Thames. In addition, various themes of the rushes are examined systematically.
