Auckland, the Capital of New Zealand, and the Country Adjacent

Facsimile edition published by Wilson & Horton Ltd, from the original first published in 1853.

William Swainson (1809-1884) was the second, and last, Attorney-General of the Crown Colony of New Zealand and instrumental in setting up the legal system of New Zealand. His 160 pages book, intended at the time as a guide to intending migrants, now ranks as an authentic contemporary record of the city as it was a decade or so after its foundation.

It gives not only descriptions of the embyo city and its surroundings as they were in 1853 but also deals with such aspects as the climate, social life, domestic conditions (including the cost of living), bush travel and an account of the discovery of gold at Coromandel.
