He Reta Ki Te Maunga
Letters to the Mountain
Maori letters to the editor, 1898-1905
Introduced and translated by Margaret Orbell. published Reed 2002. As new. 167 pages, softcovers.

The newspaper 'Te Puke ki Hikurangi' lasted nine years (1897-1906), initially as a mouth-piece for 'Te Kotahitanga', then progressively as a sounding-board for the wider community, and here Margaret Orbell gives a sample of 35 of the letters sent to the editor. Beautifully illustrated, this wonderful book captures a voice in a time we have almost forgotten.

In the nine years of its existence the Wairarapa based newspaper Te Puke ki Hikurangi provided a lively forum for ideas and news among Maori up and down the country. Included are tales of everyday life, recipes, farming and family gatherings- a voyage to the Klondike goldfields, a tragic flood and a ceremony tp mark Queen Victoria's death.
