'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' was published, with Khrushchev's approval, in 1962. But when this brief period of literary freedom ended on his fall from power in October 1964, the Soviet authorities did all they could to discredit Solzhenitsyn and his supporters. With diatribes in the centralised press, raids and confiscations by the KGB, and the removal of his friends to lunatic asylums, they hounded him for ten years until his deportation in 1974.

As a friend of Solzhenitsyn, and as a fellow-sufferer in the tribulations of Soviet authorship, Zhores Medvedev is uniquely qualified to tell this story, and "Ten Years After Ivan Denisovich' chronicles the difficulties of Soviet literature since 1962.
