USA's first woman candidate for vice presidency

Geraldine Ferraro burst into national consciousness and made history, the first woman nomiated by a major party to be Vice President of the United States.
She describes what it was like to step onto the podium of the Democratic Convention to accept the extraordinary welcome of her party and her country. At the same time, now previous candidate had to face the questions she did from whether she would be able to push the nuclear button to what she would wear to debate George Bush.The campaign generated unusual excitement but it also created unique pressures.
As a Catholic, an Italian-American and a woman, Ferraro represented a triple threat to some citizens, who did not hesitate to reveal their prejudices. Her faith was under attack on the issue of abortion , her ethnic heritage led to innuendo no other candidates had to face, and her gender raised questions about competence that her record should have silenced.
She met the challenges with wit and fortitude but even as the crowds grew in size and enthusiasm, she had to withstand the scrutiny of her husband's financial affairs and the emotional toll it took on her family.
