Saint Pius V - His life, times, virtues and miracles in the aftermath of the Protestant revolt

---------

The Catholic Church was in deplorable condition when Pope St. Pius V was elected in 1566. This was a time of spiritual confusion, political rebellion and moral laxity. Concessions to heretics and indiscipline among Catholic authorities had allowed Protestantism to spread in Europe. And in the East, militant Islam, “the Turk,” threatened to swallow up Christendom. Pope St. Pius V - stern, holy and energetic - was to be a godsend to the Church.

Holding that “bad priests are the ruin of the people,” Pius V chose 314 good bishops, based on their “maturity, sound doctrine and irreproachable conduct”. He banished openly immoral men and women from the city of Rome, fought heresy, cared for the poor, excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England, implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent, wrote hundreds of bulls, issued The Catechism of the Council of Trent, published the revised Breviary, and promulgated the Roman Missal (1570) - the last of which served the Church for 400 years and eliminated liturgical abuses.

He also gathered an allied Christian force which utterly destroyed the Turkish fleet at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, which ended Turkish dominance of the Mediterranean Sea and sent the Ottoman Empire into a long decline, from which it never again recuperated. This great victory, prophetically seen by the Pope and attributed by him to Our Lady and her Rosary - which Pius V had all of Catholic Europe praying for a victory - is still commemorated every year on October 7 by the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary.

Loved by the people of Rome as a true father, Pope St. Pius V, during a brief pontificate of only 6 years, has had a profound effect on the entire Church to this very day. In this brief, popular biography, Robin Anderson scrutinizes the character, virtues, miracles and achievements of a Saint who has to have been one of the greatest popes of all time.
