This is an auction for THE HEDGEHOG, THE FOX AND THE MAGISTER'S POX by Stephen Jay Gould.

"Gould was an impassioned and brilliant scholar and evolutionary biologist, an original and philosophical thinker, and a consummate prose stylist who never hesitated to bring his love for literature, art, and baseball to his provocative and illuminating essays. In his final book, published nearly a year after his death, he addresses his most cherished subject, the relationship between science and the humanities, masterfully debunking the "pernicious" myth that has cast these noble endeavours as irreconcilable opposites. He envisions instead a mutually beneficial reciprocity of distinct yet related and equally essential undertakings, and uses a classical proverb cited by Erasmus as the template for his inclusive, elastic argument: "The fox devises many strategies; the hedgehog knows one great and effective strategy." Each approach, Gould explains, has its merits and its limitations, as do science and the humanities, and therefore we need both. By way of illustration, Gould, as he was wont to do, performs some remarkable bibliophilic detective work, including a bemused analysis of a clumsily censored Inquisition-era volume of natural history (here's where the "magister's pox" of the title comes in). In closing, he critiques E. O. Wilson's Consilience (1998), which would have sparked a lively debate between the two giants, but, alas, Gould's admirers will have to sustain themselves with his 22 extant books, each well worth revisiting."
