When Samuel Marsden arrived in New Zealand in 1814 he brought with him “a horse, two mares, a few sheep, and poultry of different sorts”.

By 1889 there were officially 187,382 horses – ignoring wild ones and those owned by Maori.

Despite the replacement of most working horses by motorised vehicles of one kind or another, there are still a lot left, mainly involved in various recreational activities.

This large-format book ranges from the past to the present, detailing how horses are used and enjoyed by New Zealanders throughout the country.

While it is a work to be read and looked at for pleasure, but it also contains snippets of useful and interesting information:

# How big is a polo field
# How high can a horse jump
# How quickly can a horse cover a mile
# What is a Timor pony
# Why dressage training is good for any horse

Len McClelland wrote the text and Elaine Power, who is known for her bird paintings, created the artwork on the horse in NZ since the first arrived in 1814. Its role in transport and freight hauling and in many modern sporting and recreational fields are covered.

The Horse in New Zealand is a 1975 first edition published by William Collins (NZ) Ltd, Auckland. It is a large-format 88-page hard cover with dust jacket (some tiny nicks to the edges) in excellent condition for its age.
