The Thoroughbred by Peter Willett

This remarkable book traces the evolutions of the thoroughbred breed, and for the first time, examines the development from British stock - of thoroughbred breeding in the major racing countries.

The first part of the book deals with the early days of racing in England and history from 18th century to the 20th century.

The second half of the book examines the evolution of the thoroughbred from imported British stock in the rest of the Europe, the American and Australasia, the influence of climate and soil, the ideas and persaonalities of the great international breeders, and the emergence of very particular types of thoroughbred such as the New Zealand, Australian and American thoroughbred. Here again stories of the great horses and their progeny - Gladiateur, Lexington, Man o'War, Nearco, Ribot, Phar Lap, Fisherman - are woven into the text, as well as the theories of great breeders such Federico Tesio and Edmond Blance.

The book ends with a chapter which traces international trends in modern thoroughbred breeding and racing.
