The Bird Hunters By Bill Axbey
Bill Axbey was The Wildlife Service's first cadet; in 1945. He served in every section of The Wildlife Service, from Stewart Island to North Auckland.
Over the years he was seconded to three scientists as their field worker. Dr R Balham who was involved with the first waterfowl habitat survey & duck banding station. Dr K Westerskov with pheasants & Dr G R Williams on quail, in both the North & South Islands.
He was appointed Senior Field Officer in charge of the game farm and hatchery at Rotorua, and was for several years Senior Law Enforcement Officer for the Rotorua and Taupo Conservancy. Later he was appointed Conservator of Wildlife Southern Lakes, where he became involved in both the takahe and kakapo search and capture work. His field knowledge of birds both protected and game and the people who hunt them, is in New Zealand unique.
His knowledge of smooth-bores comes from a lifetime of hunting. He was a member of the first elected Auckland Waikato Fish and Game Council. A hunter and conservationist, Bill has always been a strong advocate for habitat protection. As he succinctly points out in his book hunters are the first to put their money where their mouth is, spending more on bird habitat retention and protection than any other organisation in the country.
