The Golden Years of Hunting in New Zealand
By Philip Holden

The Golden Years of Hunting traces the establishment and hunting of wild game from the days when Captain Cook made the first introductions in an attempt to provide food for the early settlers. It follows the various efforts to select and bring into the country different types of game from abroad, the wooing of kings, princes and large estate owners whose gifts became the basis of many of our established herds of deer, chamois, sambar and wapiti. Eventually, rising hostility from the farmers and foresters objecting to the damage done to their pastures, crop, trees and young animals caused the protection to be lifted from game animals and resulted in the decline of hunting as a sport.

Every kind of hunting is covered in this book from the humbler rabbiting which provided a living to the poor, through to gentleman's stalking expeditions in search of the noble stag's head, with a sophisticated camp in the bush and attendant cook and guide. Goats, red and fallow deer, chamois, sambar and wapiti all feature in the book. There are tales of excitement and danger such as the confrontation between a nine-foot boar and a man armed with only a knife, descriptions of duck-shooting in flooded waters in dismal wintery weather, pheasant and quail shooting, the chase after wild cattle and stories of women who hunted. There are tales to stir the pioneering spirit in everyone, such as the adventurous treks through rugged, unexplored mountain country in search of the elusive moose, when the very survival of the huntsman depended on his skills of tracking, bushlore, and physical endurance against the weather and the environment.
