20th Century Passenger Ships of the P&O
By Neil McCart

P&0 ranks amongst the most famous and familiar names in passenger shipping, and many books have related the company's history or told the stories of passengers and crews. This book addresses itself to the vessels themselves.

With the aid of over 200 photographs, the author reviews the careers of each of the 64 vessels built or bought for the P&0 within living memory. The book gives the peacetime routing of P&0 ships and also discusses the recent trend towards cruise services, but the 20th century has also seen the service of P&0 ships in war zones across the globe. The Ballarat in 1917 and the Viceroy of India, torpedoed in 1942, are amongst the P&0 shipswhich have met untimely ends sailing under wartime conditions. More recently, in 1982, the Canberra, serving as a troopship during the Falklands campaign, survived intense air attacks in the South Atlantic to return to tier normal service cruising from Southampton and from Sydney, Australia.

Neil McCart's thorough research includes technical data on each ship and information on their eventual fate, including those few sold to other companies for further employment.
