R.M.S Mauretania: The ship and her record
By Gerald Aylmer
Additional text by Janette McCutcheon

Contains numerous photos throughout.

The Mauretania is, perhaps, one of the best known and most fondly remembered of Britain's ocean liners. Built in 1907, she was to hold the Blue Riband of the Atlantic for a longer period than any other ship until the SS United States. Built in Newcastle, she was the pride of Britain's merchant fleet and the second, after the Lusitania, of a new breed of superliner. She and her sister were the epitome of luxury travel and the great and the good flocked to travel on her.

During the First World War she was used as a troopship and also as a hospital ship. Both she and the Lusitania had originally been designed to be converted to armed merchant cruisers in time of war, but ultimately proved too large for this role. Converted to oil fuel after the war, she was given a new lease of life, and almost twenty years after her maiden voyage produced a new turn of speed.

This volume, first published in 1934, has been updated and includes over 150 images of the ship, with-many previously unpublished. It helps remind us of the days before jet travel, when `getting there was half the fun'.
