Pennsy Streamliners: The Blue Ribbon Fleet By Joe Welsh
Once upon a time not so very long ago, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the largest and most important rail passenger carrier in the nation. Its fleet of more than 700 trains, spanning the eastern one-third of the country and serving half the nation's population, linked the Mid-Atlantic States with the great cities of the Midwest. Pennsylvania's fleet carried world leaders to the White House, soldiers to war, commuters to work, and millions of everyday travellers to destinations all across the land.
In this book, based chiefly on the rail road's own files, Joe Welsh authoritatively describes the transition of the Pennsylvania's premier east-west Blue Ribbon Fleet from the era of heavyweight cars to the end of the "lightweight" era. He also traces the eventual decline and death of that fleet in the 1950s and '60s-a time when the plight of the Pennsylvania Railroad's trains reflected the fate of the American passenger train itself.
Filled with rare colour and black-and white photographs of trains and equipment, this book also contains actual train consists, employee interviews, and period advertising that will explain operations as well as convey the feeling of a time when America travelled by train.
