Michael Palm undertakes another of his
celebrated journeys, to a vast country of unimaginable contrasts Brazil. As much of the
world is mired in recession Brazil continues to be an economic powerhouse, as well as host to a staggering variety of peoples, from the hugely wealthy to the abjectly poor, from twenty-first-century technocrats to tribes who continue to live as their ancestors have for centuries.
Michael starts his journey in The North, in the remote mountains and forests of the Lost World on the border with Venezuela, and finishes in The South at the legendary Iguacu Falls on the border with .Argentina. He travels by river-boat, float-plane and by foot to visit tribes deep in the jungle. He visits Manaus, the gaudy capital of the nineteenth-century rubber barons and on to the ruins of Fordlandia, Henry Ford's madcap scheme to corner the rubber market by building a replica of the American mid-west deep in the jungle. He samples life In the deeply conservative agriculture and mining heartland of Brazil, experiences the
startling modernism of Brasilia and the heady mix of dancing, noise, wall-to-wall urban art, Rio de
Janeiro. Michael ventures into the once-feared slums, the favelas. He travels down the north-east
coast with its African-inspired culture; to Sao Luis lki as it hosts one
of the biggest festivals outside Rio; to Recife and Salvador, where Michael is swept up in Candomble, with its myriad saints, chicken and goat sacrifices, dancers, drummers and shamans.
Michael heads to Sao Paulo, where the super rich commute by helicopter. He meets factory
workers whose origins could be Italian, Japanese or German. Heading south Michael tastes German beer served from a motorcycle sidecar and tries his hand at being a cowboy before journey's end in a boat beneath one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.
A country seen in all its moods from the mean to the majestic. A country brimming with life and energy and constant surprises. Perfect for Palin.
