The author examines maritime events which took place during the First World War that severely test the adage “All is fair in love and war” In doing so he succeeds in giving many examples of how the concept of Total war had evolved and how futile efforts had become to exercise some degree of judicial control over war at sea. He shows how all participants struggled with the same dilemmas – to what extent, for example, should a commander jeopardise the safety and lives of his own crew to ascertain the true nature of his target? Until this war, the concept of chivalry was both understood and with notable exceptions, observed. But technological advances in areas such as gunnery and submarine development brought new and hitherto unforeseen considerations into play. The author has produced a disturbing and thought-provoking book packed with drama and tragedy.
