After WW1 'Mac' was the most famous man in Australia. He had served the Anzacs on Gallipoli, the Middle East, the Somme, Pozieres and Passchendaele. During this time he led 3,000 to a living faith in Christ as well as burying hundreds of them. "Enemy shells roared overhead, but large numbers of men came to the improvised communion table and knelt to receive the emblems of salvation. The men sang hymns such as 'Abide With Me', 'Jesus, Lover of My Soul'. He took part in the charge at Lone Pine, armed with only a shovel. His 'boys' pleaded with him to stay behind, but he replied: "Boys, I have lived with you, I've preached to you and I've prayed with you. Do you think I'm afraid to die with you?" He was wounded, narrowly escaping death: "I am now right in the firing line burying the dead … The bullets whistle around us by tens of thousands…….. one bullet grazed my head, another my car, and a big shell fell four feet from me, burying me." He heard God's audible voice, saving his life on six occasions. He was summoned to Buckingham Palace by King George to be presented with the Military Cross. "Mac was a regular hero to the men—To not a few he appeared to be a kind of superman, with the power to perform miracles." Anzac Doctor, The Daily Mirror. "Diggers loved him, describing him as: "big hearted, incorruptible, considerate of others, one of the bravest of the brave, a friend of sinners..." Keith Murdoch - War Correspondent.
