Description
"Major-General Sir Edward Louis Spears, 1st Baronet, KBE, CB, MC (7 August 1886 – 27 January 1974) was a British Army officer and Member of Parliament noted for his role as a liaison officer between British and French forces in two world wars.
"Almost any book about Winston S. Churchill mentions Spears, one would think that this was his real name. In fact his original name was Spiers which he changed by Deed Poll. When he had just turned sixteen he joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Kildare and later became a second lieutenant. After passing his examinations for the regular Army he was posted to the 8th, the Royal Irish Hussars.
"He was commanded to work at the War Office on an Anglo-French Code book but that did not last long as the French were not keen to provide information. In May 1914 he was posted to Paris to work with the French and make contacts with British intelligence agents in Belgium.
"When the War commenced the English soldiers in France hardly spoke any French, and the French any English. Spiers came into his own and from then on he became the Liaison between them. He was wounded in action twice.
"When Winston Churchill arrived at the Front he noticed Spiers, took a liking to him and asked him to become his brigade major. From then on the two became great friends and Spiers continued his Liaison duties at the highest level, becoming a confidant of Churchill and acting as interpreter at many high powered meetings.
"This volume is an account of his personal experiences from his youth in the pastoral French countryside to service with the Hussars in Ireland. Latter chapters recount some of his more bizzare anecdotes from the War in 1914, and gives an historical recount of the Battle of Poiters (1356) of the Hundred Years War between France and England as it relates to his personal experience standing on the same field six centuries later."
