Item Description: 1st NZ, whitcombe. 1946. Hardcover;
Book Condition: Very Good.
8" Tall, 184pp. Black cloth, bright silver lettering. WAR. "One of the classic escape stories of this war. To begin with, the simultaneous escape of no fewer than six generals from captivity in Italy was in itself a sufficiently sensational episode but this is, in fact, more than merely a story of escape. It begins with an extrordinary vivid picture of a battle in Egypt, and it goes on through the varied scenes of captivity, escape and flight to describe with extraordinary vividness and freshness all the persons with whom the author came in contact. . It is as thrilling as such a book could well be, for its interest doesn't end with escape or begin with incarceration. The account of the train journeys through Italy and perhaps the most exciting part of the book. " Map on front endpapers. Frontispiece b/w portrait.
