Description
Among The Dead Cities. WW2 Bombing Analysed. A 361 page hardbound book with dust-wrapper written by A. C. Grayling * published by Bloomsbury Publishing in 2006. The book itself is "Near Fine'. The dust-wrapper is "Very Good Plus'.
"In the course of the Second World War, the air forces of Britain and the United States of America carried out a massive bombing offensive against the cities of Germany and Japan, ending with the destruction of Hamburg and Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Was it justified by the necessities of war? Or was it, in fact, a crime against humanity? In the sixty years since the Second World War ended this issue has grown as the benefit of hindsight has prompted fresh questioning, and as the children and grandchildren of those who endured the bombing have begun to see their ancestors as victims of the campaign. It is now one of the last great remaining controversies of that time. And it matters, argues A. C. Grayling, 'that history is got right before it distorts into legend'. In fact, not addressing these issues, he argues, as the neo-Nazi efforts to exploit the victimhood of the bombed for their own political purposes show, means that they will become a worse problem than if addressed now with clarity and frankness. Among the Dead Cities is both a lucid and revealing work of modern history and an urgent moral investigation. Grayling details the industrial nature of the area bombing in Germany, and also of the US bombing of Japan that culminated in the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He looks at the stands people took, both for and against, and crucially asks what are the lessons that we can learn for today about how people should behave in a world of tension and moral confusion, of terrorism and bitter rivalries."
