Description
British Captain George Millar's classic memoir of the French resistance and the war against the German occupation forces was published in 1945 just after the end of WWII.
He reveals what it was like to be hunted day and night by the Gestapo and vividly describes the incredible risks run by ordinary French men and women.
From his initial training in England to sabotage operations behind enemy lines, this is the most famous account of the resistance against the Germans.
George Millar won the DSO and MC for his bravery. He early in the war fought in North Africa, was captured by the Germans but in 1943 managed to escape back to England in time to join SOE.
Codemaned Emile, he was parachuted into France in June 1944 to co-ordinate resistance behind enemy lines.
In constant danger, and often with little equipment, saboteur-commander Millar led his group of the Maquis on a series of cloak-and-dagger adventures which challenge the imagination.
Trains were wrecked, roundhouses destroyed, equipment sabotaged, ambushes set and communications cut, restricting Nazi reinforcements and supplies to the face the Allied bridgeheads after D-Day and beyond.
Millar's story is one of resource, endurance and hairbreadth escapes, of astonishing success and only occasional tragedy.
Fellow Resistance fighters include swashbuckling Boulaya; Pancheau, the soft-eyed, brilliant leader; the daredevil Le Frise; the American Paul, whom all the women adored; and many nameless men from all walks of life who lived and trained in the wooded hillsides of France.
This edition of Maquis by Millar, who died in 2005, is a revised one published in 1956 by Pan Books, London.
Subtitled The Personal Record of Sabotage, Escape and Guerilla Warfare in Occupied France, it is an 11x17.5cm paperback in top condition for its age, with just some age spots to the edge.
