Description
This is the amazing true story of Gunther Prien, captain of U47, a noted German U-boat commander, written from his diaries and from accounts of those who sailed with him.
Lieutenant-Commander Prien (1908–41) was a daring U-boat ace of the first part of World War II, and the first U-boat commander to win the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the first member of the Kriegsmarine to receive the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. U-47 sank more than 30 Allied ships totalling about 200,000 GRT.
His most famous exploit was the sinking of HMS Royal Oak at anchor in Scapa Flow on the night of 13-14 October, 1939.
The attack caused other extensive damage to the British fleet and he managed to escape against the odds, stunning Britons and leaving Germany ecstatic.
Prien and the submarine went missing, believed sunk, in March 1941. He was held in such high esteem that Hitler did not ever dare announce his death.
Enemy Submarine by Wolfgang Frank is a 1977 edition published by First NEL Books, London.
It is a 156-page 11x18cm paperback in excellent condition with a fascinating table of U-boat sunk from 1939-41, and an analysis of the cause of their sinking, at the back.
