Published 1892. A rare, clean, sound and original example of the 2nd edition of this important book from the Raj. The book is profusely illustrated by JLK with drawings and sketches of Indian animals, and it details their relations with the people.

A classic MacMillan publication style of the 1800's with blue cloth embossed with profuse gilt decoration including a vignette kneeling Elephant with howdah. Book detail in guilt on spine. Gilt still bright and clean, as is cover. The front cover lower half has a patch of reduced colour where someone has cleaned something off it. Binding is still strong with minimal foxing on preliminary pages. Note foxing resistant hardwood paper

John Lockwood Kipling was a noted English art teacher, illustrator and museum curator who spent most of his career in British India. He was father of Rudyard Kipling and illustrated his son's most famous books, including the Jungle Books and Kim. His art works can still be seen today in the V&A London, (which he helped to decorate) and also at the Durbar Room in Osborne house, Victoria issued an Imperial Commission to him to design and decorate the room.
