........Opposite Poles ; By Douglas McKenzie ; Robert Hale, London / Whitcombe & Tombs, New Zealand ; blue boards, silver lettering to spine, a very good copy in like dust wrapper (price-clipped), 189pp with 15 illustrations.

One aspect of the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition which hit the headlines of newspapers at the time, but which has been singularly absent from subsequent books on the expedition, was the remarkable contrast in character and outlook of the two principals involved.

The opposite poles of this book are, of course,
Sir Vivian Fuchs

... and Sir Edmund Hillary,

the former the leader of the expedition, the latter the leader of the New Zealand group whose task was to set up supply dumps for the main group at the end of its journey.

The sensation was when Hillary decided, instead of turning back from his last dump, to make a dash for the South Pole ad so become the first man to reach it overland since Captain Scott. He then advised Fuchs not to continue the Antarctic crossing from the Pole until the next season. Fuchs decided to keep on.

Douglas McKenzie had a first-class opportunity of observing this interplay of personality. Not only was he, as a journalist, at the South Pole when Fuchs arrived to meet Hillary, but he also acted as tractor driver in the New Zealand group. As a New Zealander, he feels able to talk plainly about his compatriots. He sees Hillary as the end of the Scott tradition of explorer-adventurer; Fuchs he regards as belonging to the new school of explorer-scientist.
