"This is a first hand account of the effects of the doctrine of Apartheid in the Republic of South Africa. Here in this twentieth century state the White Supremacists have established a Maginot Line against the encroachments of the political reality of the age. The Government has imposed a series of strict laws implementing segregation to the nth degree and acquiring the philosophical tag of Apartheid.
The author, Father Hooper, is a rare witness to the repercussions of this doctrine. Not politically concerned with the State, he is a man of the Church and, as the narrative implies, a man of God. He is also a native white South African. His short journey as a missionary is predestined to hardship and futility. His concern over the need to administer to his black flock cost him his white one. Later, when one of the Apartheid laws requiring women as well as men to carry Reference Books as visas for all travel was ignored by some black tribes, the violence which resulted between white policemen and black drew him into the support of his dark brethren. No agitator, discrimination and its extreme brutal enforcement made Father Hooper a spokesman for the blacks before the police.
This is the marrow of his account. It is a fresh reminiscence of part of a long battle by one of the participants. The book received its highest endorsement from the Government itself, which banned it."
