Listing #: 489137769
Published Morgan and Scott London 1887 as part of the memorial commemorating the short life of 20-year-old Edwin Bainbridge, one of 150 who perished among the ashes of Mount Tarawera, June 10, 1886,

He was sent to New Zealand by his grandfather to recover from the deaths of his two sisters from consumption and the later death of his brother from gunshot wounds.

Shortly before his death, Edwin wrote the following note: "Written by Edwin Bainbridge, of Newcastle on Tyne, England. This is the most awful moment of my life. I cannot tell when I may be called upon to meet my God. I am thankful that I find His strength sufficient for me. We are under heavy falls of volcano."

By 2.30am, 3 peaks of the mountain were erupting, with ash reaching thousands of metres into the sky, and at 3.20am, the bed of the lake exploded, taking with it the famous pink & White terraces & the hotel, where Edwin Bainbridge was a guest.

The reaction of his family back home in Britain was to establish a Methodist church in Rotorua, the Bainbridge Memorial Church.

The grief was terrible for the Tuhourangi and Ngati Rangitihi people who lost family members, their livelihood and the bones of their ancestors in one terrible night.

(referance historical background Maori Guide Rangi, Maggie Papakura. Query Tuhoe connection?)

Decorative hardbound book of 125 pages with engraving-style B&W images such as those shown.

We would these days describe this as a "vanity publishing" I guess; so i imagine there may not have been a great many printed. No mention of publishing date so I"m assuming a first edition.

i believe this copy, presented by schoolmates of the late Edwin to their mentor - believed to be a colleague of the author, to be the only one of its kind

Condition obvious from pics? Minor wear to corners & other as you might expect but good shape for a book over a century in age. (Note: flash photograph makes gold cover text look duller than actual)
