Primitive Art of the New Zealand Maori
By Glen Pownall

Glen Pownall is a New Zealander who recognises the special bond that exists between all New Zealanders and their country. He finds the oft-made distinction between his fellow countrymen as being of either Polynesian or European ancestry as completely irrelevant in view of the ties of common interest and a shared future which bind the two ethnic groups as one.

So much that has been published on Maori art has lacked a time sense, there has been confusion and omission in recognising the period when an artist lived and the way in which styles developed. This book discusses solely the significance of pre-contact as opposed to post-contact Maori art. It does not attempt to consider the adulterated works of either the transitional period or that of modern day artists. Pre-contact art is distinguished by its essential simplicity, movement and joy of form which relate closely to the best of modern art. The many colour plates of this book amply confirm this point of view and reproduce the work of great, though unknown artists, whose art is timeless.
