Eric Lee-Johnson was one of the earliest New Zealand painters to reject European models in favour of a native imagery, he won a cryptic poetry from lonely townships, humble dwellings, ravaged hills, and slain forest. In trying to persuade New Zealanders to look long at their land and ponder their relationship to it he was close to writers such as Fairburn, Charles Brasch, Kendrick Smithyman and Maurice Duggan. He expressed annoyance at those who paid him the tribute of imitation, but his continuing influence on other artists is testament to his success in compelling his fellow countrymen to look at their land afresh.
