Fairburn and Friends Edited by Dinah Holman & Christine Cole Catley
Preface:
This book, which marks the centenary of the birth of our father A R D (Rex) Fairburn in 1904, is about some of his closest friends. Rex would surely have thought it fitting that we pay tribute to some of the many friends who meant so much to him and whose lives were once so closely interwoven with his and ours.
The extraordinary number of Rex's friends arose from his exceptionally gregarious nature, his passion for the great outdoors and his wide range of interests as a writer, artist, critic and activist on public issues.
The range of backgrounds of his friends also reflects what would be called today `career moves', in his case brought on by a series of motivations or events schooling, his father's wishes, intense boredom, wanderlust, the Depression , marriage and children, war, being manpowered, straitened circumstances and, finally, due recognition of his talents.
