The Linklater family, of Viking descent, originates from Orkney, Scotland
Hugh Linklater came to NZ with two friends, one of whom was Robert Milson. His son Joseph was born on the West Coast in 1876 and served in the Boer War

Joseph Linklater attended the School of Mines in Thames. On his way there he called to see Robert Milson and his daughter – his future wife Annie, whom he married after working as a miner

In 1905, while they were living at Colyton, Joseph bought land at Pohangina which became Ke Tenga farm
After the death of Annie’s father, the Linklaters moved to his farm where they later built a homestead on the corner of Milson Line and Bunnythorpe Kairanga Road.
They also bought several blocks of land in the area which later became farms for their children
