Pioneer, man of property, and founder of a famous New Zealand boarding school, James Dilworth is unquestionably a nineteenth-century Auckland notable. Over a-period of more than fifty years he played a significant part in many public activities, touching causes as diverse as provincial politics, the trustee savings bank movement, church affairs, the agricultural and pastoral society, and education. Yet he was also a very private man revealing little of his private life and personal feelings for the outside world to observe and record. Consequently, both during his life and in the years since, he and his wife Isabella have remained shadowy figures. This biography by Emeritus Professor Stone is an attempt to reveal the true, the `historical' James Dilworth. To do this, Russell Stone draws extensively on legal, particularly land, records, and hitherto unpublished family lore. In his attempt to fill some puzzling gaps he paid a visit to County Tyrone in Northern Ireland where Dilworth was born and reared. 'I learned more there', Professor Stone has said, 'than I had first imagined I would.' Much unknown material was uncovered, and he 'became aware, for the first time, that traits of personality, idiosyncrasies and convictions which I had earlier imagined were peculiar to Dilworth, were in fact derived from a broader Irish Culture which had shaped him in the first twenty-three years of his life.' The result has been a fascinating and beautifully illustrated book.
