SIGNED by author Lillian G. Keys.

'Philip Joseph Viard, SM, was born in France in 1809 and came to New Zealand as a missionary priest in 1839. He endured such hardships during the first six years, especially a period in the tropics, that an observer noted that he aged twenty years in that time. Consecrated a bishop in 1846, he came to Wellington in 1850 as Administrator of the new diocese of Wellington formed in 1848. The diocese covered all of New Zealand below the 39th Parallel, including the whole South island. In 1860 he recieved from Rome the title of Bishop of Wellington. Throughout the crowded and often troubled years of the young colony, until his death in 1872, he worked with complete dedication and humility, always showing a particular love and understanding for the Maori people.
