By Mona Gordon

This book by Mona Gordon is a study of her grandmother, whose memory, she recalls, 'as sweet as the lingering perfume of rose-leaves'. The author writes in the introduction: 'Only her own period could have produced her, and her life spanned the reign of Victoria and exceeded it by a bare four years. It is almost unrecorded; sometimes the story proceeds along the delicate tissue of ribband, a treasured scrap of a century-old dress, a piece of jewellery, a diary as impersonal as the weather it records.'

It is also a portrait of a vanished New Zealand and a vanished way of life, 'gone for ever from our harsher and more realistic world, in which colours are cruder, scents drowned by the reek of petrol, and the motor-mower cut down the evening primrose.'

Readers who enjoyed Miss Gordon's earlier successful biography of Josiah Clifton First, of Matamata fame, and one of Auckland's most colourful pioneers, will find special interest in this lovingly drawn picture of his wife.
