Douglas lived on the west coast of the South Island, spending most of his time exploring, surveying and mapping the coast from 1867 to 1903. From 1889 to 1903 he was exploring regularly for the Lands and Survey. About a third of this book is devoted to an account of the life of Charlie Douglas, and about two thirds to his writings.
