Description
Memoirs of a New Zealand Surgeon "...written by a man whose vocation has taken him about the world, and enabled him to see human beings at their best and worst.
His training was partly NZ, partly Scottish, partly English. He obtained high qualifications both in medicine and surgery, and served in several parts of the world with R.A.M.C. during the First World War.
He was one of the last NZ general surgeons, those men who could and did operate successfully on nearly every part of the human body.
...this book, spanning as it does some fifty years of work, gives a vivid picture of changes and developments in medicine and surgery."
Arthur was born at Auckland, NZ in 1889. He was educated at Mt Eden State School, and Auckland Grammar before entering Auckland University College. He then moved to Edinburgh where he won class medals in anatomy and the Miles Surgical Prize. After graduation he was house physician and house surgeon at East London Children's Hospital, and then at the Great Northern (later Royal Northern) Hospital, London, before joining the RAMC during the first world war. He was surgeon to the Rawalpindi Hospital in France, in 1915, and with the same hospital in Mesopotamia before spending two years in the Army Orthopaedic Hospital at Southmead, Bristol.
On returning to Auckland he was appointed to the surgical staff at Auckland Hospital where he was senior surgeon for twenty years. He was examiner in surgery to Otago University.
