The Seven Lives of Lady Barker
By Betty Gilderdale

The compelling biography of Lady Mary Anne Barker is a fascinating account of a Victorian woman, who through the course of her much-travelled life lived in England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Mauritius, Australia and Trinidad. Momentous historical events of the period, such as the Indian Mutiny and the Zulu Wars, all directly impacted upon her personal life and resulted in domestic upheavals which only a woman of her adventurous spirit could have withstood and recorded with a degree of equanimity.

Her life began in 1831, in Jamaica, as eldest child of Island Secretary, Walter Stewart. Surviving a cholera epidemic, an earthquake and malaria, she went to England with her first husband, Captain Barker. After the Indian Mutiny she travelled to India and camped across the country with the army. Colonel Barker, as he became, died soon after the end of the journey and she returned to England, eventually marrying Frederick Broome. He was sheep farming in New Zealand and she returned with him to Canterbury.

Lady Barker is best remembered in New Zealand for her classic book station Life in New Zealand.

This is the first full account of her rich and sometimes turbulent experiences.
