William Laird Whitby spent fifty years at sea. He was born in Norfolk, England in 1838, went to sea at 14 years old, and on one voyage witnessed the Charge of the Light Brigade. He arrived in New Zealand in 1859 and although he married there were no children
This book is based on his writing and letters

Part One covers his youth and early voyages

Part Two talks of sailing from Lyttleton on coastal trading ships, and becoming a ship owner, and eventually a steamship owner
It also tells of other members of his family: those who stayed behind in England and those who came to NZ. The author is descended from Captain Whitby’s sister, Harriet, who lived at Havelock

Part Three documents his retirement at Lyttleton and his loss of sight. He was elected to the Lyttleton Borough Council in 1899, was a Justice of the Peace
