Kimble Bent was an American, son of a ship builder and his half-caste Indian wife. He ran away to sea at 17 and took the Queen’s shilling in Liverpool in 1859 and, after 2 years in India, arrived in NZ

He deserted from the British Army in 1865 and spent 13 years living in the bush in Taranaki as a Pakeha-Maori, fighting alongside Ngati Ruanui and Nga Rauru, and taking three Maori wives. Titokowaru called him Tu-nui-a-moa

Here he tells James Cowan of some of his life in the bush and some customs of the Hau Hau
