When the Bug Bites: John Baylay’s story of challenges afloat & ashore
By John Baylay

John Baylay tells in graphic style, with wit and humour, how after demobilisation after World War II, a chance encounter showed the way clear for his future - founding and developing an unique sailing club - the Island Cruising Club. with members collectively owning the Club boats, ranging from a 78 Ion converted Brixham trawler down to racing and sailing dinghies. moored round a floating Club house in beautiful Salcombe harbour in South Devon.

It is a tale of financial triumph against enormous odds - raising money to buy as many Club boats as would attract sufficient members to join and make the whole project viable.

It is a tale of overcoming the prejudices of the more conventional yachting fraternity and proving that the principles of amateur sailing could still be upheld, indeed strengthened, in a new concept of a teaching club. It is a tale of one man's faith and drive strong enough to overcome all obstacles and turn a dream into a reality.

'Twenty-five years later, with no thought of retirement, John and his wife changed direction completely, going 'down-under' to New Zealand to pastures new and fresh challenges to meet.
