The Pioneers of Port Nicholson
By David McGill

Over the past eight years David McGill has written a whimsical and affectionate newspaper column on the history of the harbour city. From those excursions grew this more comprehensive voyage through the history of Wellington harbour.

The journey begins with what is thought to be the first extensive and authentic account of Maori settlement around Te Whanganui-a-Tara and of the Pakeha peoples who followed. It describes the enterprises that developed the city of Wellington, from pioneering efforts to private and public administration of the port. It includes the first history of boatbuilding in this city and the move from sailing ships to steamers and finally container shipping. For the section on the defence of the harbour the author won the Cowan Memorial Prize for Historical Journalism.

More than 100 historic photographs turn back the years. What is not illustrated visually comes to life under the author's talented pen - people like the wharfinger who once built a chimney in his office while waiting for a ship to come in; or the turn-of-the-century crowds who flocked to Lyall Bay for sandcastle competitions and treasure hunts in the dunes.
