Eight Daughters, Three Sons: Glenaray, Southland
By Barbara Harper

Twenty two year old George Pinckney of Wiltshire landed in New Zealand in 1885, fired with ambition to become a successful sheepfarmer. How well he succeeded in this is demonstrated by his great Southland station Glenaray (pronounced Glenairy), whose 150,000 acres - half of which consist of hard high country - are still farmed today by his descendants.

In 1893 Pinckney married Edith Tripp of Orari Gorge station, and the size of their family gives the title of this book. It was a perfectly-matched union and a consistently happy one until 1948, during which year both partners died.

Barbara Harper, whose earlier books have established her as a notable chronicler of country life in bygone days, tells the Glenaray story with characteristic warmth and insight, helped in her task by Pinckney family memories, archives and photographs. The result is a splendid book, which is as "Southland" as the great high-country station of Glenaray itself.
