The College of St John the Evangelist

Te Waimate and Auckland

The College of St John the Evangelist has a rich, complex, sometimes stormy and controversial history for higher learning in Aotearoa New Zealand. Its beginnings at Te Waimate in 1843 were interwoven with Bishop Selwyn's vision of a multi-level establishment which would serve both the missionary and settler Anglican churches, incorporating the needs of Maori and Pakeha. St John's was relocated to Auckland in 1844 where a large area of land was bought, a significant part of Selwyn's legacy to the College and the Church.

Many themes ebb and flow in this institutional history: the participation of women and the place of married students and families, the financial struggles and erection of the College's buildings, relations with Auckland University College, changing patterns of student life, the inclusion of Maori students, differences over the way the College should be governed, varying emphasises in worship and theological education.

St John's has undergone significant changes in its one hundred and fifty years of life. Its Wardens, staff and students have included many who have given leadership in the Church and the wider community. This history provides a lively insight into the people and personalities associated with the College.
