Puffing up a Storm. Early Maori and Tobacco. Volume 1. "Kapai te torori!" John Broughton. 1966 1st edition. Te Roopu Hauora Maori o Nga Tahu (The Ngai Tahu Maori Research Unit), The Department of Preventative and Social Medicine, University of Otago, Dunedin

Documents how the smoking of tobacco became absorbed within the cultural framework of Maori people, this volume covers the period from the time of arrival of Captain Cook in 1769 to the 1930's

The Pakeha brought tobacco to the Maori people. Smoking had not been a part of the Maori way of life. The first Pakeha to be seen smoking a pipe was Captain Cook, later sealers, whalers, traders and settlers followed and tobacco and pipes were often used as a koha - as well as a form of currency, especially where the sale of land was concerned. By the end of the 1840s the use of tobacco by Maori was widespread among adults and not unknown among children and torori (native tobacco) was widely grown
Early artists and photographers, such as Goldie and Burton, depicted Maori women smoking pipes. European women of the times did not smoke. Other artists and writers, including Lloyd, McCallum, St Bruno and Northwood made fun of them

Towards the turn of the century Dr Maui Pomare warned of the dangers of smoking as pipe smoking declined and cigarette smoking took over
Smoking was the norm for WWI soldiers
