The British Army In New Zealand 1840-1872. First Edition 1974, end paper maps, Black and White Plates, maps, 271 Pages, Published by Reed Wellington. A Very Good Copy.
'The Maori Wars are classic examples of the bitter conflicts which 19th century European, and particularly British, colonial expansion inevitably created as the indigenous tribes attempted to stem the none-too-gradual encroachment on their preserves. Like the Red Indians of North America, the Maoris at the outset accepted and cooperated with the white men, the first with whom they came into regular contact being the missionaries. The tattooed savage was gently wooed away from cannibalism, from tribal warfare and from the dark and terrible spirits he worshipped. Tom Gibson relates the remarkable history of the Maori Wars with scholarship and humour- for, though remarkably bloodthirsty, they were not without their lighter side, and were certainly not without honour.
