On October 15, 2007, some 300 New Zealand mainly armed police officers in full riot gear, including balaclavas and sunglasses, raided the township of Ruatoki, which lies at the northern end of the Ureweras.

They were ostensibly searching for material to support charges under the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002. Following an investigation into the police allegations of terrorism by the Solicitor-General, no charges were brought under this act.

At the same time as Ruatoki was being locked down, police raids were taking place in other parts of the country. By the end of the day, 17 people were reported as arrested.

The "global war on terror," launched in the US five years earlier, had finally arrived in New Zealand.

This book has critical essays by Maori and Pakeha from a range of backgrounds and presents views that look beyond the cant of the mass media.

It examines coercive NZ policing and the failure to demonstrate responsiveness to Maori, the woeful responses on Maori MPs to the raids, the criminalising of activism and dissent, the country’s deep-seated fear of Maori with guns, fatal flaws in news media coverage and the insidious language of terror.

Editor Danny Keenan has a PhD in history and is a lecturer in Maori Studies at Victoria University.

Contributors also include Maori politics lecturer Maria Bargh; lecturer on Maori, Pacific and indigenous writing in English Alice Te Punga Somerville; indigenous rights lawyer Moana Jackson, and professor of history at Victoria University, Richard Hill.

Other contributions are from legal specialists, ex-NZ Police and from those arrested.

Terror in Our Midst? Searching for Terror in Aotearoa New Zealand edited by Danny Keenan is a 2008 first edition published by Huia Publishers, Wellington. It is a heavy, quality 28-page 15.5x23.5cm card soft cover in great condition with two sections of photographs.

It is an ex-library book with stamps on the endpages and a reinforced spine.
