Beyond the Waimakariri is to mark the centennial of the Canterbury Settlement. It deals with that large part of the province comprising the counties of Ashley, Eyre, Kowai, Oxford and Rangiora, and the boroughs of Rangiora and Kaiapoi; bounded on the south by the Waimakariri, and on the north by the Waipara. These pages bring out the story of the Canterbury small farmer, for although the sheep-man occupied his usual place as first-comer after the Maori in this part of the province, the fragmentation of the sheep runs into freehold arming settlements took place comparatively early. The book brings to life many unexpected pictures—small sailing ships loading cargo in the centre of Kaiapoi: Leithfield as a thriving market centre: Saltwater Creek's brief flowering as a seaport: Oxford as a busy sawmilling town backed by virgin forest, and Rangiora, from a long an untidy collection of corrugate iron and wooden shops, growing up around its stockyards. It also conveys the achievement of these North Canterbury settlers who by the turn of the century had transformed their 'desert' into one of the most productive and prosperous agricultural and pastoral districts in New Zealand. Chapters include: The Maori, Exploration, Early Kiapoi, The Rangiora Back Settlement, The Native Reserve, Woodend – Waikuku, The Early Kowhai Settlements, The Kowai Railway Settlement, The Ashley Country, The Eyre Country, Cust, Harewood Forest – Oxford, Kiapoi – Port and Borough, Rangiora Market Town and Borough, Communications, The Railway, Farming, The Churches, Education, The News, Local Government, Social Interludes.
