Last of the Whalers: Charlie Heberley’s Story by Heather Heberley, Published by Cape Catley, 2002, 1st Edition, Softcover, Pgs 212, b&w + colour photos, maps, appendices, bibliography

Condition: Near new condition, crease across bottom right corner of cover, no markings or inscriptions within, clean and bright throughout.

Set in the Marlborough Sounds Cook Strait area and also Great Barrier in the Hauraki Gulf we find out about the life of a whaler in 20th Century New Zealand. Heberley’s forbears had a history in whaling in New Zealand from the very early days of european settlement. We learn just how it was, whaling kiwi style, how the whalers lived, their experiences, the dangers they faced, and how it was for their families. From first hand recollections, recorded and published material along with some exceptional photos from private collections a very graphic picture is gained of an era never to be repeated, and places whose history has begun to fade into obscurity. Chapters include: In the Beginning, Home to Oyster Bay, Farming and Whaling, A Whale in his Sights, ‘Thar She Blows’, To Okukari, Innovators and Pranksters, Changes, Great Barrier Island, A New Challenge, Living on the Edge, A Different World, The Mighty Totara.
