PRESERVATION INLET and CHALKY INLET are the two most southerly sounds of Fiordland. Their recorded history - little known until now - is both varied and exciting. From the time of Captain Cook they were the scene of numerous endeavours - sealing, whaling, the search for flax, coal and gold mining, sawmilling and even holiday cruising. But today, apart from the well known lighthouse settlement on stormy Puysegur Point, these sounds have reverted to what they were. The regenerating bush has covered the scars and man has handed back to nature the scene of his former struggles.
In this full-scale study of the region the Begg brothers of Dunedin have done for "Port Preservation' (or "Preservation Harbour') what they did so successfully for Dusky Sound in their earlier prizewinning book DUSKY BAY. They have steeped themselves in the whole southern coast of the South Island, from Foveaux Strait round to the western fords, and then armed with cameras and their notes , have organised an expedition to explore the inlets...
The final result is a thoroughly reliable and magnificently illustrated book on one of New Zealand's remote but romantic corners. It is not an area that many people will visit-but in these pages, the reader will meet all those hardy spirits - Maoris, whaling captains, explorers, surveyors, prospectors, lighthouse keepers, the Begg brothers - who have penetrated its dense bush and ridden its turbulent waters.
The appendices contain excellent comparative listings of the bird life and vegetation of the area, as well as two fascinating historical documents never before printed in full
