James Robert "Jim" Dennistoun (* 7. March 1883 in Geraldine , Canterbury , New Zealand ; † 9. August 1916 in Ohrdruf , Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , German Empire ) was a New Zealand mountaineer , explorer and soldier in the First World War . He is known especially as a first ascent of Mitre Peak .

.. March 1910 with two companions the first ascent of 2875 m high Mount D'Archiac in the Southern Alps . [2] The latter is generally regarded as his greatest achievement mountaineering. Much known however is his first ascent of the Milford Sound located 1692 m high Mitre Peak on March 13, 1911. The idea came from Dennistoun along with his brother George (1884-1977) in 1909 developed during a sea voyage. He eventually chose one of Donald Sutherland , the "hermit of Milford Sound", recommended route. The rise together with his climbing mate Joe Beaglehole (1875-1962) began at 7:30 am. However Beaglehole remained about 300 meters below the summit back exhausted, the Dennistoun over steep and smooth granite slabs reached alone. Both men had returned to the starting point of their tour together at 9:45 pm. At first, Dennistoun was not awarded the summit because Sutherland had said bluntly that the Miter Peak could not be climbed. Three years later, however, found Jack Murrell (1886-1918) and Edgar Williams (1891-1983) at the second ascent of the summit on Dennistoun built Steinmann with a handkerchief attached to it, thus confirming Dennistouns success.
